The impact of Hurricane Oscar in the eastern region of Cuba, combined with the collapse of the National Electrical System last Friday, left much of the population in the Guantánamo province inaccessible, causing alarm among relatives living abroad.

In light of this situation, Oscar Junior Guilarte Rodríguez, a Cuban in the United States, expressed his gratitude after receiving news from his loved ones in Imías, one of the locations hardest hit by the weather phenomenon, thanks to the posts made in the Facebook group "Revolico Maisí."

"Thank God I have heard from my family and my town, everyone is well, although many houses have lost their roofs and the river has overflowed. But the most important thing is that everyone is okay. A thousand thanks to everyone, and may God's blessing be with you and your families," wrote Guilarte, reflecting the relief that came with the confirmation of the safety of his loved ones.

The young man also expressed his gratitude to all the people who mobilized to help him obtain information about his family and the community of La Tinta de Jauco, which was greatly affected by the hurricane: “Thank you to everyone who was willing to help me find out about our families. I will always be grateful to you.”

In a previous post, Guilarte expressed his willingness to pay up to 30,000 pesos to anyone who could reach the community of La Tinta and find out about the state of his family: "I haven't heard from them in five days, and now a hurricane is passing, and no one is saying anything."

"I give 30,000 pesos and I will be in debt for the rest of my life. I know that money is not everything and I trust in God and that you are well, just let me know that you are okay; the rest will be recovered if God permits, but I need to know something," the young man pleaded.

Hurricane Oscar, which made landfall in Cuba on October 20, left a trail of destruction in eastern Cuba, with Guantánamo province being the most affected.

With a preliminary toll of six dead, the situation remains critical, especially in the municipalities of San Antonio del Sur and Imías, which suffered unprecedented flooding.

Currently, the municipality of Imías and other towns in the province of Guantánamo remain cut off due to the severe flooding that occurred in that area during the passage of Oscar, which hit there as a hurricane.
