The devastation caused by Hurricane Oscar in eastern Cuba, combined with the collapse of the National Electric System last Friday, left much of the population in Guantánamo province cut off from communication, raising alarm among their relatives living abroad.

In light of this situation, Oscar Junior Guilarte Rodríguez, a Cuban in the United States, expressed his gratitude upon receiving news from his loved ones in Imías, one of the areas most affected by the meteorological phenomenon, thanks to the posts made in the Facebook group "Revolico Maisí."

"Thank God I have heard from my family and my town; everyone is well, although many houses have lost their roofs and the river has overflowed its banks. But the most important thing is that everyone is safe. Thank you all so much, and may God's blessing be with you and your families," wrote Guilarte, expressing the relief that came with the confirmation of his loved ones' safety.

The young man also expressed his gratitude to everyone who rallied to help him gather information about his family and the community of La Tinta de Jauco, which was heavily affected by the hurricane: “Thank you to all who were willing to help me find out about our families. I will always be grateful.”

In a previous post, Guilarte expressed his willingness to pay up to 30,000 pesos to anyone who could reach the community of La Tinta and find out about the status of his family: “I haven’t heard from them in five days, and now a hurricane is coming, and still no one is saying anything.”

"I'll give 30,000 pesos and I’ll be in debt for the rest of my life. I know that money isn't everything, and I trust in God and that you are well; I just need you to tell me that you’re okay. The rest will be recovered if God allows it, but I need to know something," the young man pleaded.

Hurricane Oscar, which made landfall in Cuba on October 20th, left a trail of destruction in the eastern part of the country, with Guantánamo province being the hardest hit.

With a preliminary toll of six deceased, the situation remains critical, especially in the municipalities of San Antonio del Sur and Imías, which experienced unprecedented flooding.

Currently, the municipality of Imías and other towns in the province of Guantánamo remain cut off due to the severe flooding that occurred in the area during the passage of Oscar, which struck there as a hurricane.
