"Water is what I need!" was the emphatic response of a Cuban mother to the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel during the president's visit to Guantánamo.
The woman, tired of the government's neglect, raised her voice to express her desperation and denounce the critical situation that her family and the rest of the population face, in a context marked by severe floods and a preliminary toll of seven dead in Guantánamo, including a five-year-old child.
In a video published on the social network X, the woman, visibly exhausted and uninterested in hearing the president's explanations, reported having a sick person lying in bed without food: "What do I give him?" she asked, reflecting the desperation and lack of resources to face the crisis.
"Now water, food, milk, and a set of brigades are coming to clear the way," Díaz-Canel pointed out, trying to calm the desperation of the woman who interrupted him several times to express her discomfort.
"A group of measures has been taken to support the population," the leader repeated, without looking directly into the woman's eyes, as if reciting a rehearsed speech, while moving through the crowd surrounded by a strong security detail.
Díaz-Canel arrived this Wednesday at the municipality of San Antonio del Sur, in Guantánamo, one of the regions most affected by Hurricane Oscar.
During his exchange with the community, a man in charge of 29 children in a special school reported that the government took them to that location and abandoned them.
The Cuban government reported that there are, preliminarily, over a thousand homes with damage in several municipalities of the province of Guantánamo, the main territory affected by Oscar.
