The Cuban regime announced this Friday that it will begin the evacuation of Baracoa, an area under heavy rains since the early morning, following "the experience of the last few days," during which several people lost their lives due to the flooding associated with the passage of Hurricane Oscar last Saturday.

The Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz, stated on his X account that "the authorities are taking measures to ensure the evacuation of the residents."

"The harsh experience of the last few days shows that we cannot let our guard down. We urge the people to stay informed and alert," he added.

In the early hours of this Friday, intense rainfall has caused rivers such as the Miel to overflow and streets in Baracoa and Cabacú to flood in the province of Guantánamo, worsening an already critical situation following the passage of Oscar.

The rains have caused severe flooding in vulnerable areas, leaving many families in despair. Social media has been flooded with testimonies from residents, like that of Eriner Labañino, who expressed that his home is flooded, with more water inside than outside.

Living conditions have deteriorated further in Baracoa, where residents lack electricity, drinking water, and fuel. The lack of information, exacerbated by massive blackouts, has fueled anxiety among residents, who have criticized the government's response to the crisis.

In Baracoa and its surroundings, 128.8 millimeters of rain were reported in just six hours this Friday. Libertad and 1 streets, as well as communities such as La Playa and El Matadero, are severely affected by the flooding.

The weather report warns that the rains will continue, which could result in new landslides and floods in areas already affected. According to meteorologist Mirian Teresita Llanes, this weather phenomenon is a consequence of a trough and the passage of a tropical wave.
