Intense rains have been battering the Guantanamo city of Baracoa since early Tuesday morning, causing severe flooding in the region, which is still recovering from the impact of Hurricane Oscar on October 20.
According to reports from Miguel Noticias, it has been raining heavily in Baracoa for hours, resulting in severe flooding.
For his part, the Cuban Liander Reyes reported on his Facebook profile that heavy rains have impacted San Luis, Jamal, and Baracoa, causing significant flooding in an area where the ground is already saturated.
Local official Juana Eglis Fernández Louit added that the rains have caused landslides on the La Farola viaduct, which has been severely impacted by the passage of Oscar.
The situation in the city is alarming, and conditions are becoming increasingly critical due to the continuous rain in several areas, worsening the disaster already affecting the region.
Rain resumed on Monday as residents of Baracoa continue to face power outages, a lack of cooking fuel, and shortages of drinking water that have persisted for several days.
Guantánamo, one of the most impoverished provinces in Cuba, has seen hundreds of families in rural areas lose everything.
Local authorities urged residents on Friday to stay in safe places and follow emergency instructions due to forecasts of heavy rainfall in the coming days.
The floods last Friday left many Cubans homeless in Guantánamo and have devastated areas that were already affected by the hurricane and the energy crisis, marked by widespread blackouts.
