Activists and family members have issued a plea for help to save Lía Isabel García Torres, a five-year-old girl who is fighting a tough battle against leukemia.

Activist Yamilka Laffita, known on Facebook as Lara Crofs, who managed the campaign to save the young Amanda Lemus months ago, posted on her Facebook wall the story of the girl, along with a request to raise funds on the GoFundMe platform so that García Torres can receive treatment at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami, which has accepted the case.

"Born on January 9, 2019, at the Maternidad Obrera hospital in Marianao, Lía spent her early years in the town of Cubatabaco, Artemisa, before moving to Mayabeque, near a cement factory. Since she was young, she has suffered from health issues, including pneumonia and respiratory crises," explains the publication.

It notes that her situation became complicated a few months ago when she started showing bruises and pallor. After being transferred to William Soler Hospital in Havana, tests confirmed that the girl had leukemia.

Since then, Lía has been receiving treatment at the Juan Manuel Márquez hospital, where she has experienced adverse reactions to the serum and has been in intensive care. Although she managed to return to the oncohematology ward, her treatment has been interrupted due to complications.

Currently, Lía is in a phase of reintensification of her treatment, but she still feels weak and requires assistance to stand up and sit down, the post details.

Her health has also been impacted by the medications, but the doctors assure that after this phase, she will be ready for a bone marrow transplant.

Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami has accepted their case, but the family will have to face the costs of accommodation and treatment in the United States. With no relatives in the country, they are raising funds to cover these expenses.

"Please, any contribution is valuable. Together we can help save Lia's life," request her family, who are now using the hashtag #SaveLia.

The campaign on the GoFundMe platform has barely reached 1% of a total of $30,000.

At the beginning of the year, a campaign involving thousands of Cubans successfully facilitated the departure of the Cuban girl Amanda Lemus from the country, where she underwent a liver transplant. She was also facing the challenges of living in a country where many procedures are not performed due to a lack of resources, and where treatments can be interrupted because of medication shortages.
