Hurricane Oscar not only left material losses but also human casualties in its wake as it passed through eastern Cuba. However, amidst the pain, numerous displays of solidarity have emerged among Cubans, reflecting mutual support in times of adversity.
Among these acts of solidarity, a Cuban truck driver from Tampa stands out for donating a tool kit to a young man in San Antonio del Sur, thereby enabling him to continue with the recovery efforts following the hurricane.
The artist Daniel Ross Dieguez shared this story of solidarity on his Facebook profile, where he recounted that the truck driver, who works for a Canadian company, personally requested that the kit be delivered to Henry, one of the young men who helped rescue several people during the floods caused by the cyclone.
Ross mentioned that food was also provided to Henry and Freidi, along with other necessary supplies for them and for Darwin, his wife, and their daughter, who also faced the consequences of the cyclone.
"Mission accomplished. Thank you, community. Cubans are always great wherever they are," expressed the young filmmaker, emphasizing the spirit of solidarity that remains strong among Cubans, even from outside the country.
In another post, Ross noted that the neighbors rescued by Henry and Freidi have received care and support: “Today I brought them medicine. Their feet are still swollen. With the medication I purchased using the donors' money, a neighbor who is a nurse will take care of their dressings. They have hygiene products, food, and my girlfriend Claudia Urrutia Quevedo and my mother-in-law Naivis Quevedo Llorente donated blouses like the ones in the photo and other clothing.”
The young man also expressed his gratitude to those who have collaborated, adding: “Thank you all. Before the week is over, I will acknowledge the list of those who have donated and have allowed me to name them for their humanitarian gestures. Thank you very much.”
Among the stories of solidarity and heroism is that of Jonathan Frómeta Navarro, who has become one of the individuals deserving special recognition following the floods that marked a turning point in San Antonio del Sur, due to the devastating impact of Hurricane Oscar on that municipality in Guantánamo.
Although he prefers to avoid the spotlight, his neighbors assert that during the floods, "he was the man to thank" for his help and bravery in the midst of the emergency.
