Images of the mass evacuation taking place since this Saturday in the municipality of San Antonio del Sur, in Guantánamo, have started circulating on social media.

"Mass evacuation in San Antonio del Sur, Guantánamo, due to the possible occurrence of heavy rains in the coming hours... couldn't this have been done two weeks ago when Hurricane Oscar hit?" posted Cuban activist Adelth Buen Gamboa on Facebook.

This Saturday morning, the Civil Defense warned of the high risk of flooding in the area, noting that the persistent rains could lead to a rapid increase in river water levels, similar to what occurred fifteen days ago during Hurricane Oscar, which resulted in eight deaths and several missing persons in the region.

The evacuation began at 2:00 PM, and families were instructed to take milk for the children, medications for the elderly, and to secure any valuables they wished to keep in elevated areas of their homes.

The situation is particularly delicate due to the lack of electricity in the area, which has impacted the population for several weeks. As a result, information is being communicated via loudspeakers.

The Provincial Defense Council has also urged the neighboring communities of Baracoa and Maisí to remain vigilant and attentive to weather updates, as conditions are deteriorating due to two systems threatening to develop into hurricanes near the Caribbean island.
