Cuban Yordan Álvarez, the standout slugger for the Houston Astros, has been nominated as one of the three finalists for the Silver Slugger Award in the competition among designated hitters in the American League of Major League Baseball (MLB).
With an impressive .308 batting average, 35 home runs, and 85 RBIs, the Cuban is in contention for this offensive award against Brent Rooker (Oakland Athletics) and Giancarlo Stanton (New York Yankees), according to journalist Francys Romero.
On the social media platform Facebook, Romero added that despite his excellent stats, the competition is tough, as Rooker surpassed him in home runs and RBIs, which could complicate his chances of securing his second Silver Bat in this category.
This recognition of his offensive performance places Álvarez back in the elite ranks of hitters in MLB, reinforcing his status as one of the most prominent Cubans in professional baseball.
The player from Las Tunas achieved several milestones in the last competitive season, including extending his streak of four consecutive seasons with at least 30 home runs and becoming the ninth player from the Astros to hit for the cycle.
In a memorable July game, he achieved that feat with a hit in the first inning, a home run in the fourth, a triple in the sixth, and a double in the eighth, while driving in two runs in the match against the Seattle Mariners, although his team lost 6-4.
