Following the two earthquakes that shook the eastern region of the island this Sunday, the first with a magnitude of 6.0 and the second 6.7, damage has been reported to homes and state buildings in several provinces, including Santiago de Cuba.
Journalist Anolvis Cuscó Tarradell shared on Facebook the cracks in the walls of the Northern Children's Hospital, known as "La Ondy," caused by the earthquakes.
In the town of Cobre, there are also reports of damage caused by the earthquakes, Cuscó noted in a Facebook post.
"Severe structural damage in various homes," he stated.
In another post, the journalist reported that the recent earthquakes have further jeopardized the structure of the No. 2 Masonic Lodge in Santiago de Cuba, which already had existing damage.
"However, it is now more vulnerable than ever. Many of its walls are cracking," he noted.
Marilus Rivero reported in the Facebook group “Bazar Santiago de Cuba” that there are damages from the earthquakes in Manaca, El Cristo.
The internet user shared some images showing a house with damage to several walls, primarily cracks.
The user herself made a second post showing more damage in another property in the same locality.
William Sánchez Román posted images of the damage in an apartment of one of the buildings in the José Martí Urban Center on the Facebook group "Bazar Santiago de Cuba."
The photographs reveal, above all, vertical and horizontal cracks that demonstrate the severity of the earthquakes reported this Sunday.
Although the earthquakes were felt in eastern Cuba and in some central localities, the most significant damage is primarily concentrated in the province of Granma.
Dr. Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service of Cuba at the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), warned on his social media that the situation is quite complicated following the occurrence of two earthquakes this Sunday southeast of Pilón, in the province of Granma.
Hence, the government of Santiago de Cuba advised the residents of high-rise buildings, among other measures, to spend most of the day in open areas, away from structures.
