A strong earthquake shook Eastern Cuba on Sunday morning, alarming its residents, many of whom took to social media to report the magnitude of the quake.
At the time of writing this note, the Cuban National Seismological Service has not issued any official communication regarding the event, and its website is currently down, making it impossible to provide information about the magnitude and location of the earthquake's epicenter.
So far, reports of perceptibility have only been published in several municipalities in the province of Santiago de Cuba, but it is not ruled out that the earthquake may have also been felt in Guantánamo and Granma.
According to the Facebook post by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, the magnitude of the earthquake is estimated to be around 6 degrees, a figure that has not been confirmed by the relevant authorities.
For his part, the head of Operations and Relief for the Red Cross in Santiago de Cuba, Aris Arias Batalla, also attested to the magnitude of the phenomenon.
"An intense and strongly perceptible earthquake occurred in Santiago de Cuba, at approximately 10:51 AM. VERY STRONG," stated Arias Batalla on social media, adding the approximate time of the event.
For its part, the official state-run television broadcaster in Santiago de Cuba also confirmed the event and reported that the earthquake reached a magnitude of 6, a detail that, at the time of writing this note, has not yet been officially confirmed.
"A tremor of 6 magnitude was felt very strongly. We will provide details shortly," reported TV Santiago on their social media.
