Cubans distribute 1.3 million pesos among families affected by Hurricane Oscar in Guantánamo

It was reported on social media that a group of Cubans donated 1.3 million pesos to 60 families in San Antonio del Sur, Guantánamo, affected by Hurricane Oscar.

A group of supportive Cubans distributed at least 1.3 million pesos among several families in San Antonio del Sur, in Guantánamo, one of the areas most affected by Hurricane Oscar last October.

User Luis ViralInfluencer Suárez shared a video in the Facebook group “Here with the hero in Sancti Spíritus and throughout Cuba, help and love!”, in which he explained that they delivered 20,000 pesos to each of the 65 families affected by Hurricane Oscar, amounting to a total of 4,320 USD (approximately 1.3 million pesos at the current exchange rate).

“Donation to those affected by Hurricane Oscar,” the post stated.

In another post, the young man showed one of the individuals who benefited from the donation, whose house was severely affected by the flooding of a river in Macambo, San Antonio del Sur.

The internet user also shared a reel in the Facebook group “Here with the hero in Sancti Spíritus and all of Cuba, help and love!” where you can see Pablo Ávila, one of the members of the solidarity group, explaining to a beneficiary how they managed to raise the funds.

"A group of us raised some money to help those who have been affected," Ávila said, referring to the purpose of the donation for the victims of Hurricane Oscar.

The man explained that they initially planned to assist 65 homes; however, they were only able to help 60, as some houses were completely destroyed. In those cases, they decided to provide two donations instead.

"It's more than what I had," commented the beneficiary.

Another shared video showed Ávila giving money to a single mother who, with tears in her eyes, expressed her gratitude for the donation.

"Right now they brought some rice cookers, and I didn't have a dime to buy one. Thank you very much," he said.

Since the impact of Hurricane Oscar in the province of Guantánamo last October, there have been numerous expressions of solidarity from Cubans towards those affected.

One of the most notable examples is Geomanis Faure Ramírez, known as the "workshop man," who travels daily to San Antonio del Sur to repair, free of charge, the mattresses of those affected by the hurricane.

He is not the only entrepreneur who has decided to support those affected in recovering their mattresses. The brothers Víctor Manuel Hernández Escalona and Juan Antonio Bello Escalona have joined this noble mission to assist in the recovery efforts in this municipality of Guantánamo since October 22.

"We are from Camagüey, and we provide home delivery of mattresses and other products in Las Tunas, Holguín, Santiago de Cuba, and all towns up to Baracoa. I have never had the chance to go to Maisí, but from Baracoa I continue to Imías, San Antonio del Sur, Guantánamo, Palma Soriano, Bayamo, and then back to Camagüey. I know all the provinces, municipalities, and places in the East, from the most remote to those along the main roads," commented Hernández Escalona.

From Facebook, they both focus on promoting solidarity through the manufacturing of mattresses, aiming to support the most vulnerable. On the platform, they are seeking assistance to identify those in greatest need of these products so they can donate some of their pieces to them.
