Nearly fifty sports facilities in Artemisa were affected by Hurricane Rafael, with damages ranging from structural collapses to the loss of equipment.
In statements to Radio Rebelde, Nelson Lara García, the director of sports in the region, explained that the weather phenomenon caused damage in 48 locations, including the 26 de Julio Baseball Stadium.
Similarly, there are reports of damage in the baseball stadiums of Güira de Melena (Tricontinental) and San Antonio de los Baños (Julio Pérez).
Among the losses (partial and/or total) are vital spaces for the development of physical activities and the well-being of the community.
The government journalist Guillermo Rodriguez Hidalgo posted images on the social media platform Facebook that clearly show the extent of the devastation in some of the structures.
The hurricane made landfall around 4:20 p.m. last Wednesday, at category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, and exited the country as a category 2 storm just before 7:00 p.m. the same day, via the Bay of Cabañas in Artemisa.
On social media, users shared graphic evidence of the damage caused by the powerful cyclone in several municipalities of that western region, as well as in Havana and Mayabeque.
According to the data presented by the Cuban regime, Artemisa is where the greatest damages are concentrated, particularly in hospitals, schools, service stations, homes, roofs, and the electrical network.
