The cruise ship Explorer of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean, experienced a terrifying moment in the Atlantic last week after being hit by a colossal wave during a severe storm.
The accident occurred during the journey to Miami, after the ship departed from Barcelona on November 2. This Thursday, Univisión Noticias revealed new images of the nightmare experienced by the travelers and statements from some passengers.
One of the testimonies describes the experience as "traumatic" and recounts how the individual experienced panic attacks and anxiety after losing sensation in her hands due to fear. "It was something terrible," said the woman interviewed.
Reports indicated that the impact of the wave and strong gusts of wind tilted the ship by up to 45 degrees, causing panic among the passengers, who were quickly instructed to return to their cabins while the crew activated the safety protocol.
The trip was scheduled to end on November 14 in the City of Sun, but the cruise was forced to make an emergency stop in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Due to the seriousness of the incident, the captain of the cruise ship decided to make a stop in the Canary Islands to provide care for an injured passenger and assess the damage to the vessel.
Some fearful travelers, moved by the experience, chose not to return to the ship and flew directly to Miami.
Royal Caribbean announced that it will make the necessary adjustments to the voyage to safely complete the itinerary to Miami. The ship is expected to arrive at its destination on November 17.
