Flor de Cuba has faced much criticism for her videos on social media depicting her life on the island and her progress. She finds it out of place for others to question her prosperity, as if living in Cuba meant that everyone should endure the same hardships.
In a video she shared on Instagram from Miami, where she is visiting, the content creator addressed those criticisms.
"In Cuba, there are social classes just like everywhere else; it’s just that in the rest of the world, people are not offended by the prosperity of others nor do they ask others to stop living well out of 'empathy,'" he wrote in the description accompanying the video.
"People blame those at the top of these social classes for the economic problems of the rest of the population; they even ask those who can to stop doing so, to stop showcasing themselves, or to stop living the way they do out of solidarity with others," she reflects in the video.
Flor de Cuba rejects the notion that the issue lies with its content on social media, but rather with the place where it is shared: "It doesn't bother you to see a Cuban bragging or living well in another country; it bothers you that they brag and live well in Cuba. I think this is completely twisted and goes against the narrative that seeks to eliminate inequality. If you were consistent, you should be happy when someone breaks through that barrier of misery."
"I believe it's time to stop romanticizing reality, to view those who have managed to succeed as inspiration rather than competition or as responsible for anything, because they bear no responsibility whatsoever. They can't alter a country's economic situation for better or for worse. And yes, social classes already exist in Cuba, and it's time to understand this with maturity," the influencer stated.
