Following the earthquakes that occurred on November 10, which caused significant damage to the school infrastructure in Pilón, located in the province of Granma, around 350 children have had to move to a temporary school set up in a military base with the support of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR).
Journalist Jorge Luis Ríos Frías reported on Facebook that the new center, named “Amiguitos de las FAR,” accommodates students from the Augusto César Sandino semi-boarding school, one of the institutions most affected.
Ríos stated that the location has the necessary conditions to ensure the quality of the teaching process, emphasizing that the tents, now converted into classrooms, aim to guarantee the continuity of the educational process. In his words, this constitutes "a priority for the educational sector of the municipality."
“With this initiative, the FAR, in clear cooperation, reaffirms its commitment to promote the development and welfare of the Cuban people,” noted the journalist spokesperson for the regime.
Meanwhile, the families of the children are hoping for the swift progress of repairs in the damaged schools to provide students with a more stable and suitable environment for their education.
Since November 10, when a precursor earthquake of magnitude 6.0 and a main earthquake of 6.7 shook the region, especially the municipality of Pilón in Granma, the population has faced days filled with uncertainty and fear.
This Thursday, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake was recorded, which, fortunately, caused neither material damage nor human casualties. However, it was felt in the province of Granma, particularly in the municipality of Pilón, located just 19 kilometers from the epicenter.
A week after the powerful earthquakes that shook eastern Cuba, the residents of Pilón are facing a harsh reality: they continue to live in tents while grappling with uncertainty, fear, and a lack of basic resources.
The government arranged temporary shelters to accommodate affected families, a decision that drew criticism for its limited scope and the lack of attention to other equally impacted communities.
So far, the earthquakes have resulted in ten injuries and at least 3,752 damaged buildings, according to official government figures.
