A roof on the verge of collapsing: The desperation of a Cuban ignored by the authorities

The man, suffering from chronic health issues, lives in critical conditions due to the deterioration of his home. Despite having sought help for years, the authorities have not responded, putting his life at risk.

A resident of Havana described the terrible conditions of his home located in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality, and he denounced the lack of attention from the authorities regarding his case.

In a heartbreaking statement, Juan Osmani Paula Suárez, a resident of Almendares Street number 6, between Santa María and Santa Teresa, described to CubaNet the conditions in which he survives amid the ruins that his home has become.

"Everything is getting soaked, I've lost everything—my furniture, my belongings—and there's no one to help me," she stated, while showing how her home has slowly been crumbling.

The house, which is in a critical state of disrepair, poses a constant danger to her life. "Look at how this house is; water comes in from everywhere. Everything gets wet, everything is ruined, and no one helps me," stated Paula Suárez.

According to a video she shared with the cited independent media outlet, she has been seeking support from local and state authorities for over seven years without receiving a response. "I have gone to housing, to the State Council, to everyone involved in this, and no one has come to help me," she lamented.

The deterioration of the home has been devastating. The walls are rotting, the roof has collapsed in several areas, and the rains have worsened the situation. "It rains more inside than outside. I spend entire nights in a corner waiting for it to clear up so I can sleep," he remarked.

As a result of these conditions, Paula Suárez has lost nearly all of her belongings. "I've lost my furniture, the television, everything. And at any moment, I might lose my life if I don't get help with this situation," she emphasized.

The images captured in his home reveal a disheartening scene: a cramped space filled with damaged furniture and makeshift repairs in an attempt to halt the deterioration.

"I'm living like the indigenous people, all cornered because I've lost everything," she stated. Her health situation adds an extra burden to her challenging reality. Paula Suárez suffers from chronic illnesses and relies on medication, but the stress of living in such precarious conditions has further affected her well-being.

Despite the help from some neighbors who have donated basic items, the needs far exceed the temporary solutions. "Thanks to the neighbors, I have a television, because the previous one broke when a piece of the roof fell," she explained.

The case of Paula Suárez highlights an increasingly common issue in Cuba: houses in a state of collapse that endanger the lives of their residents, while the authorities remain inactive.

"When the roof falls down on me, there will be no solution; after I'm dead, I won't need anyone's help," he concluded with sadness.
