José Daniel Ferrer, leader of the Cuban Patriotic Union (UNPACU) and promoter of Cuba Decide, has begun a new hunger strike to protest the torture he is facing in prison.
Ferrer, who is detained at the Mar Verde prison in Santiago de Cuba, confirmed that he was brutally beaten on November 18 by officers serving the Cuban regime.
The complaint was made public by his sister, Ana Belkis Ferrer, who described those responsible for this act as "miserable and cowardly murderers" and demanded justice for him as well as for other political prisoners on the island.
The situation of Ferrer, who is serving a four-year prison sentence since 2020, has raised alarms among human rights defenders, who have reported the ongoing violations occurring within Cuban prisons.
Ferrer was arrested on July 11, 2021, for his attempt to join the popular protests that year.
International organizations and activists have reiterated their call to highlight the conditions of political prisoners in Cuba and to exert pressure on the regime to end the repression.
