Lisnet Guzmán de la Cruz, a 15-year-old teenager, recently passed away after a suicide attempt driven by cyberbullying and defamation on social media. This tragic event has shocked the community of El Cristo in Santiago de Cuba, prompting her family to offer a reward for information leading to the identification of those responsible.
On Thursday, December 19, an anonymous post on the Facebook page "Ventorrillo El Cristo" attacked Guzmán with malicious comments about her personal life, a situation that led her to ingest 36 tablets of a medication (name withheld for privacy), passing away two days later at the Children's Hospital Norte in Santiago de Cuba.
Her sister, identified on Facebook as Lia Castro, offered a reward of $200 this Thursday in the group "Ventorrillo El Cristo" to the administrators of the digital community for any information that may help identify those responsible for the cyberbullying.
"I am Lisnet's sister. This note is for you, trainer of the 'Ventorrillo del Cristo' group. I will give you 200 dollars for information as long as it is truthful. Please contact my family and show us who was responsible for the post made about my sister; we will not expose you," the young woman stated.
In the comments section, several people have expressed their outrage over the incident that cost the life of the young woman from Santiago and have condemned the administrators of the Facebook group who, despite having the opportunity to report the perpetrator of the cyberbullying, have remained silent so far.
An internet user identified as Soyce Losa stated, “I hope that you, the victim's family, have reported to the police that the incident was a result of cyberbullying, and that you don't just stand by. Do everything possible to ensure that those responsible are held accountable. If we all push for it, the case will go viral, and the police will act and bring the culprits out from wherever they are hiding.”
For her part, Marina Xiomara expressed, “You can count on us. Many are already searching for those individuals, but don’t forget to inform the police. They will pay dearly for this.”
Similarly, Arley Reyes Leyva stated, “I believe that the administrator is the one behind all of this, because in cases like this, where there’s even a death, it becomes serious.”
Guzmán's case is a painful reminder of the dangers of cyberbullying and the need to curb the spread of malicious posts on social media.
