Cuban authorities detained on Friday the driver of a Hyundai Sonata who fatally struck a cyclist on Thursday morning on Monumental Avenue in Havana and then fled the scene.

The person responsible for the incident was detained by the authorities, according to reports on Facebook from acquaintances of the victim, identified as Jorge Mederos Guerra, a 67-year-old resident of Guanabacoa.

The elderly man was riding his bicycle near the entrance of the Havana tunnel, by the Monumental close to the Naval Hospital, when he was struck by a black Hyundai Sonata, a relative reported.

According to witnesses, the driver did not stop nor provide assistance to the injured person, who died at the scene due to severe bleeding.

Jorge Mederos, described by those close to him as a good husband, father, and grandfather, was working as a custodian and was returning home from his shift at the time of the accident.

"A close family member commented on social media, 'He was a noble man dedicated to his family.'"

The incident has left his family devastated and in mourning on the eve of the year-end celebrations.

The Revolutionary National Police (PNR), with the assistance of several witnesses and social media users, managed to locate the vehicle involved. A nurse from the Calixto García hospital reported that the black Hyundai Sonata had been spotted, which led to the driver's arrest.
