The National Seismological Service of Cuba reported that, since the magnitude 6.1 earthquake that occurred in the early hours of December 23 in the province of Santiago de Cuba, a total of 437 aftershocks have been recorded to date.

The earthquake, with its epicenter in the municipality of Guamá in the eastern part of the country, has triggered a series of aftershocks, three of which have been noticeable to the population, the updated report states.

The report, published on January 1st on the Facebook Portal of CENAIS (National Center for Seismological Research), detailed that in addition to the 437 aftershocks following the December earthquake, a total of 8,842 aftershocks from the earthquake that occurred on November 10th, with magnitudes of 6.0 and 6.7, have been recorded. Out of these, 140 were felt by the Cuban population.

The earthquake in December raised concerns in the region due to landslides and blockages on major communication routes. The road connecting the provinces of Granma and Santiago de Cuba, one of the most affected, was closed to traffic because of significant landslides that blocked the way.

Although no fatalities have been reported so far, the earthquake caused significant damage to infrastructure, particularly to homes and public buildings.
