Today, Saturday, January 4, 2025, the situation in Cuba continues to unfold with events that reflect the complex economic and social reality of the island. Since the beginning of this year, the Cuban government has implemented significant reforms to Decree-Law 22 of 2020, imposing duties in dollars on certain non-commercial imports. This measure aims to optimize customs revenue and capture foreign currency in the context of an economic crisis.

At the same time, the opening of a supermarket in Havana that only accepts payments in dollars has sparked considerable social debate. The well-known comedian Ulises Toirac voiced his criticism of this initiative, highlighting the increasing dollarization and economic inequality. The majority of the population, which lacks access to foreign currency, is excluded from this consumption model, further escalating social discontent.

In another high-profile event, Sandro Castro, the grandson of the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro, was filmed being detained by a traffic officer on Fifth Avenue. This incident reinforces the perception of preferential treatment towards the elite connected to the Cuban regime.

Tragic events have also shocked the community. A man in San Miguel del Padrón faced the wrath of his neighbors after attempting to abuse a minor, leading to a violent attempted lynching. This incident highlights the social tensions and community justice in an atmosphere of despair.

On the other hand, a tragic traffic accident in Santa Cruz del Sur, Camagüey, resulted in the death of Ramón Chávez Águila, leaving a small daughter orphaned. The accident, which resulted in 63 injuries, prompted a significant outpouring of support through blood donations and solidarity with the victims and their families.

Amid these events, the increasing dollarization in Cuba continues to drive up foreign currency in the informal market. The US dollar has reached 315 Cuban pesos, reflecting the economic instability. This situation presents additional challenges for Cubans who rely on remittances from abroad.

Throughout the country, the spirit of solidarity is also evident, as demonstrated by the community efforts in Camagüey, which have come together to support a baby whose mother died during childbirth. The community mobilization has made it possible to gather the necessary resources to assist the family during this difficult time.
