Anthony Santos, artistically known as Romeo Santos, is an American singer-songwriter of Puerto Rican (father) and Dominican (mother) descent, born on July 21, 1981, in the Bronx, New York
Santos is globally known for his interpretation of Dominican bachata, which he has fused with other rhythms such as hip hop and rhythm and blues (a U.S. genre that originated from blues, jazz, and gospel). He is regarded as the king of Bachata.
In 1993, Santos formed the Dominican music group Aventura in New York, whose song "Obsesión," written by him and featured on the 2002 album We Broke the Rules, topped the charts in countries like Italy, where it held the number one position for 16 consecutive weeks. In America and the United States, it also reached number 10 and remained on the charts for several months.
Since 2011, Romeo began his solo career. He has recorded four studio albums under the record label Sony Music Latin. The first three, Fórmula: Vol. 1 (2012), Fórmula: Vol. 2 (2014), and Golden (2017), have earned him numerous awards and accolades, including four Guinness records, such as the best-selling tropical solo artist, the tropical solo artist with the most years at number one on the Billboard charts, and the tropical album with the most years at number one on Billboard’s year-end charts.
The fourth record was thanks to his song "Propuesta indecente," which earned the title for the most consecutive weeks on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart. The song stayed on the chart for 125 consecutive weeks, from August 10, 2013, to December 26, 2015.
In April 2019, "Aullando," a track he performed with the Puerto Ricans Wisin and Yandel, which belongs to the album Campeones del Pueblo by the latter two, achieved Triple Platinum and Gold status in Mexico. The song's author is the Cuban Descemer Bueno.
Among her most popular collaborations are, Ella y yo with Don Omar, Frío, Frío with Juan Luis Guerra, Yo también with Marc Anthony, Hey Ma with Pitbull and Britney Spears, Margarita with Carlos Santana, Loco with Enrique Iglesias, and more recently La mejor versión de mi with Natti Natasha, among others.
In 2019, Santos shared a video on his Instagram profile featuring a clip of Celia Cruz along with the group she was a member of, the Fania All-Stars. He wrote, "This serves as an example that our Latin music has been breaking barriers for decades, even in non-Spanish-speaking markets. Here is our queen Celia Cruz in Africa, alongside the Fania All Star."
In the cinema, Santos lent his voice to Early in Angry Birds in 2016 and made a cameo in Fast and Furious 7 in 2015.
