On May 20th, the birth of the Republic of Cuba is celebrated. And even though it is a date censored by the government of the Island, that day was a watershed moment in the country's history.
After 30 years of struggle, on May 20, 1902, for the first time, the people elected a Cuban president, Tomás Estrada Palma. From that moment on, the US troops began to withdraw, thus fulfilling the people's greatest aspiration to embark on the path towards democracy.
At the Palace of the Captains General, Estrada Palma expressed: "I swear by God and promise on my honor to fulfill the office of President of the Republic of Cuba for which I have been elected, complying with and enforcing the Constitution."
On that day, thousands of people gathered in front of the Government Palace where the Cuban flag was waved for the first time.
