Cuban director Fernando Pérez premieres film “Tales of one more day”

The Cuban film director Fernando Pérez premiered the feature film Tales of another day, about six stories that take place during the coronavirus pandemic.

The film is made up of six independent shorts, developed by an equal number of filmmakers: The braid, by director Rosa María Rodríguez; The bird girl, by Alán González; Mercury, by Carolina Vega; His and hers, by Yoel Infante; The days, by Katherine T. Gavilán and Sheyla Pool; and Gallo, by Eduardo Eimil.

Through these short films we tell the inconsequential accumulation of pandemic days and an attempt is made to reveal "how the human being in the face of his loneliness reinvents himself" in a paralyzed city, detailed the cultural magazine Saves.

One of the stories talks about the survival in the midst of the health crisis of a girl who lives in a citadel with her mother in Old Havana.

The daily life of a young woman who travels around the city as a delivery girl is also shown; the story of an ex-convict who arrives in the city during curfew.

Likewise, there appears a girl obsessed with capturing what her camera lens can see from the balcony of her house; and the singularities of a trumpeter who rehearses from his home despite the complaints of his neighbors.

Fernando Perez, one of the most important directors of Cuban cinema, managed to weave these stories together in just under a month into what became a "fine, beautiful and important" product, according to film critic Joel del Río.

"The film that needed to be made," he said.

The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) stated that the work was made in just 28 days and during moments of anguish and uncertainty, in the most complex part of the Covid-19 quarantine in Cuba.

This is ICAIC's first co-production with independent production companies. i4films, Wajiros Films, and DB Estudio participated, in association with Cocuyo Media Lab and Audiovisuales ICAIC.

The premier was presented at the capital's Charles Chaplin cinema at 6:00 p.m. by invitation, and an hour later it was shown to the public at the central Yara cinema, which reopened its theater with Tales of another day after a long break due to the health crisis.

Movie theaters in several regions of Cuba opened their doors after the mandatory closure imposed by the high numbers of infections and deaths due to COVID-19 throughout the country.

According to the portal CubacineOn November 5, screenings began in the main movie theaters in Havana, such as Multicine Infanta, La Rampa, Yara, Riviera, Chaplin, 23 y 12, Acapulco and Enguayabera.

The capacity of each room will only be 30 to 50% and compliance with sanitary measures will be required in each one. The entrance price to these spaces remains at five Cuban pesos.
