The Spanish ballet player of Cuban origin Orlando OrtegaHe is recovering from a surgical procedure that will keep him out for the entire season, including the Budapest World Cup scheduled for August.
Olympic runner-up in 2016 and medalist ofbronze in the 2019 universal event, Ortega suffered a tear in the semitendinosus tendon of the hamstring which, after weeks of evaluation, led specialists to suggest undergoing surgery.
After the operation, the athlete wrote on his Twitter account: “Very grateful to Dr. Jordi Puigdellivoll and Dr. Olivé for their impeccable work in my intervention. Soon we will return with the help of Miguel Ángel Cos with more strength than ever.”
The man that many saw as a replacement for the former world record holder Dayron Robles has not competed internationally since the orbital championship four years ago. In 2021 he made the trip to the Japanese capital to participate in the event under the five rings, butcould not run due to injury in the hamstrings.
In statements to the sports newspaper Relevo, Ortega emphasized that, despite missing this course,"The most important thing is next year's Games, That is why I have had surgery now to start the 2024 season well with peace of mind."
Born 31 years ago in Artemisa, he was chosenBest Athlete in Spain in 2020.
Ortega left the Cuban delegation that attended the Moscow world championship in 2013, and after that he becamedescribed as "ex-Cuban" in the national official press.
