US chicken exports to Cuba increase

Chicken exports from the United States to Cuba increased last June, after having decreased for three consecutive months.

Economist Pedro Monreal stated that chicken meat exports registered an increase of 44.7% in value in June and a growth of 9.3% in tons, for a total of 27,631.

The figures are the highest since January, when exports saw an increase but declined in the following months.

In a thread on his Twitter account, the economist explained that despite the ups and downs in exports, there is evidence of a "growing Cuban import dependence on the main meat food (not mixed) consumed in Cuba."

The more than 27 thousand tons of chicken cost 32.84 million dollars and were purchased by state and private companies.

Based on the monthly reports of the Agriculture department American, explained that the value of a kilogram of US chicken exported to Cuba in June 2023 ($1.19) had an increase of 33.7% compared to the previous month (0.89).

It is the most widely purchased product in the United States and ranks above others such as dairy products, pork, pastry and pasta products, non-alcoholic beverages, among others.

So far, the lowest figure in the chicken exports It was reported in April, when it fell 4.4% compared to March, but the monthly contraction was greater in exported tons with a fall of 14.8%.

These are the lowest levels since October of last year, when the country registered just 15,980 tons of chicken sent to Cuba, valued at 20.54 million dollars, figures that in turn were the second lowest of that year.

Last year, purchases of food and agricultural products from Cuba to companies in the United States totaled $328.5 million dollars, which marked the largest increase in commercial operations between both countries in the last decade, according to official figures.
