Florida investigators accused a pair of Broward County men of a voraciousUber Eats scamwhich cost the company more than a million dollars.
Trayon Morgan, 21 years old, andRoy Blackwood, 38, discovered a loophole that allowed them to convert prepaid company credit into gift cards by posing as both Uber Eats customers and delivery drivers, according to police.authorities.
"Morgan used the Uber Eats software application and acted as the customer and courier," the Broward County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Friday.
"He placed a grocery order as a pick-up consumer under a fake account, and would then accept the order as the courier," it said.
Uber then provided a pre-authorized credit of up to $700 per purchase. However, according to investigators, he canceled the consumer's order and spent the credit on a gift card.
In a single day, detectives allegedly watched as the couple scammed Uber out of more than $5,000, purchasing gift cards to 27 different Walgreens stores.
"Morgan created several fake accounts to maintain the fraud," the sheriff's office alleged. "He often used stolen and fabricated identities of Uber drivers, using their license information and altering it with his own photo."
Morgan and Blackwood have been charged with organized fraud and grand theft.
A few years ago, another fraud related to Uber came to light, when several drivers in the United States pretended that passengers had dirty the car during a trip, with the consequentcollection of the additional fee that this entails.
Uber's policy on its website clarifies that customers are responsible for any damage done to the interior or exterior of the vehicle.
Taking advantage of this, they charged passengers dozens of dollars more for spilling vomit or other substances, in which case the amount can rise to 80 dollars.
