The prestigious Cuban-American musicianRené Lorente sued the Colombian singer Karol Gfor plagiarizing the melody of his song "Something different", composed in 1998.
According to the judicial document made public by the authorities, theartistwassued for copyright infringementand plagiarism related to your song"Don't Be Shy", composed with DJ Tiësto.
The Cuban filed his lawsuit against Carolina Giraldo Navarro before theUnited States District Courtfor the District of Puerto Rico, said themedia.
The composer and musician demanded that the defendants be requiredpay three million dollars "for his mental anguish, humiliation, damage to his reputation and embarrassment."
"In the artistic field, 'coincidences' are highly improbable. Therefore, any resemblance that is derived entirely is mere plagiarism, a copy, theft, an usurpation of the rights of the copyright holder, or a violation of copyright," said the court document.
According to the report, there are "distinctive melodic elements, harmonic progressions, harmonic and lyrical structures that attest to a direct relationship between both compositions."
In this context, the document concludes that there is "substantial evidence supporting the allegations of copyright infringement and plagiarism, unauthorized use, mutilation of the work, moral and monetary damages."
René Lorente is recognized for having been a member of the Aragon Orchestra, for his career as a soloist and for his collaboration with musicians such as Senén Suárez, Enrique Jorrin, Meme Solís, Cachao López, Chucho Valdés and Albita Rodríguez, among others.
During his career he has developed in genres such as son, chachachá, guaracha and instrumental and fusion music, and has stood out in the execution of instruments such as the 5-key wooden flute.
Thesongby Karol G and Tiësto was released in 2021. Last year, he triumphed at the 2022 Tu Música Urbano Awards in the Top Latin Crossover Song category with this song.
