An Atlas Air company plane carrying cargo and carrying five crew members caught fire in mid-flight on Thursday night shortly after taking off fromMiami International Airport (MY).
The Boeing 747 had left for the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, located in Carolina, Puerto Rico, when a fire allegedly started in one of its engines.
A shocking video filmed by witnesses - which has gone viral in recent hours - showed the plane leaving a trail of fire over the darkness of the sky in the city of Miami around 11:00 p.m. (local time).
Despite the impressive images, the aircraft managed to return on time and carried outa successful emergency landing at Miami Airport.
At 11:03 p.m., Greg Chin, representative of Miami International Airport (MIA), verified the safe arrival of the aircraft, as revealed by thelocal press
“We can confirm that flight 5Y095 landed safely after experiencing an engine malfunction shortly after departure from Miami International Airport (MIA). The crew followed all standard procedures and returned safely to MIA. At Atlas, safety is always our top priority and we will conduct a thorough inspection to determine the cause,” the company detailed in a statement.
However, theFederal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation, as dictated by the protocol for this type of incident, to determine the causes that started the fire.
Founded in 1992,Atlas Air is a cargo and passenger airline based in Purchase, New York, United States.
It operates flights under its own brand and for other cargo operators, commercial airlines, and government and military organizations.
The company has a large fleet of aircraft, including several Boeing models, such as the Boeing 747.
