At the moment the Cuban government has not issued any official note in which it reports on such releases.

"The fact that they are releasing the alleged culprits of the Cuban smuggling network shows that all of this has always been an invention of the regime to remove international pressure from themselves and to pretend that they are not deeply involved in all of this.", stated Orlando Gutiérrez Boronat, coordinator of the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance (ARC) in statements reported by the aforementioned media outlet.

Imprisonment of 17 people for alleged human trafficking network

It was at the beginning of September, barely 72 hours after thefirst statements from the Cuban Foreign Ministry on the subject, authorities of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) announced the arrest of at least 17 people in connection with an alleged human trafficking network that operated in Russia and Cuba.

After the first revelations that confirmed the presence of Cuban mercenaries hired by the Russian Army, the regime remained silent until it issued a statement in which it claimed to be working to dismantle a human trafficking network dedicated to transporting Cuban citizens to the conflict, as well as as well as to recruit others who already resided in Russia.

“As a result of the investigations carried out by the bodies of the Ministry of the Interior regarding these events,To date, 17 people have been arrested, of which one of them is the internal organizer of these activities, supported by two other people equally residing in the country.“Colonel César Rodríguez Rodríguez, Head of Department in the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation of the MININT, said at that time.

As explained at the time, these two detained assistants were dedicated to searching for and contacting Cubans interested in traveling to Russia as mercenaries. Once recruited, these people met with the organizer who sent the data to Russia and from there they sent them the ticket, at no cost, for them to emigrate.

Among those recruited it was said that there were many with criminal records and antisocial behavior, but an official list was never released.

José Luis Reyes Blanco, Chief Prosecutor of the Directorate of Criminal Proceedings, said that the events being investigated could constitute a crime of "mercenarism", which contemplated serious sanctions that could reach up to 30 years of deprivation of liberty, perpetual deprivation of liberty and also death penalty.

In addition to mercenarism, Attorney General's Office officials said they were considering possible charges that could include human trafficking and hostile acts in a foreign state.

The coming to light of what would be the release of Cubans from the recruitment network for that invasion on the island occurs at a time when revelations about new Cuban mercenaries in Ukraine continue.

Added to this is the recent death of at least two young Cubans recruited by Russia for the war. This month the death ofRaibel Palacio Herrera (21 years old) and ofYansiel Morejón (26), both victims of human trafficking between Havana and Moscow.
