The intense heat wave currently affecting the state of Florida is impacting the animals at a shelter, which has requested donations of supplies to help mitigate the effects of the high temperatures.
The Medley animal shelter in Miami has appealed to the community to donate "fans, portable air conditioners, cooling mats, food, towels, or any other supplies," as reported by the Instagram profile Only in Dade this Thursday.
Donations can be dropped off at 3599 NW 79th Ave, Doral, FL 33122, at the animal shelter that, according to its profile, "lacks air conditioning," which affects the animals suffering from the heat.
There are only two fans available for the 150 dogs at the location, which is insufficient to mitigate the heat recorded there, reaching up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius), the report noted.
“The workers are seeking any assistance from the community and are open to ideas or suggestions,” emphasized the Instagram profile.
Finally, they requested that anyone working in a factory that makes industrial fans consider donating a couple of units or providing them with a discount.
In Cuba, also affected by the intense heat wave but facing a different economic reality, animal welfare advocates urged people on Thursday to place containers of water in doorways, patios, and gardens.
In this regard, the organization Cubans in Defense of Animals (CEDA) warned on Facebook about the importance of keeping animals hydrated during the high temperatures, pointing out that they need water now more than ever.
"Let's do it for those who have no one else," they stated on social media, highlighting the helplessness faced by animals in Cuba, who are often saved from death solely by the efforts of rescuers and not by government initiatives.
