Relatives of the young Cuban Eugenio García Domínguez, brutally murdered in Holguín by a group of thieves on December 26, 2023, sent an open letter to the authorities to denounce the lack of transparency in the investigation of the crime.
Carlos José García Domínguez, uncle of the 25-year-old young man, denounced in a Facebook post that, from the beginning, the local police acted with extreme slowness and lack of professionalism, with the family itself having to search for and detain the alleged killer on December 30, 2023.
The man, a resident of the municipality of Mayarí, in the province of Holguín, sent a letter to the Ministry of the Interior, the Central Investigation Directorate, and the Supreme Court of the Republic of Cuba, where he recalled that the police did not actively participate in the search, leaving this task in the hands of the community, which found the body in an area near the river with signs of extreme violence.
The confessed murderer was transferred to the provincial investigation office in Holguín and then to the provincial prison, but the case remains unsolved, emphasizes. The relatives demand that if there are more qualified professionals in investigation in Havana, the case should be transferred there to obtain results.
Carlos José García regrets that the case has not been given the importance it deserves, and highlights the brutality of the murder, which prevented the family from holding a proper wake due to the state of decomposition of Eugenio's body. Furthermore, he criticizes that the trial is intended to proceed without having found the stolen money or the possible accomplices of the crime, who are believed to be at least three other young individuals.
Carlos José García concludes his letter demanding greater severity towards the confessed killer and justice for his nephew, who was brutally murdered after allegedly arranging online to purchase $4,000 with Yohandry Rodríguez González.
On December 26th, he left on his bicycle with the money -1.3 million Cuban pesos to buy the dollars- and at 6:00 p.m. his family was calling him, but his phone was already switched off.
The police were immediately notified, and due to the slow response from the authorities, the young man's relatives asked for the community's support in searching for him.
Several contingents started the search and found him lifeless on the evening of Thursday, December 28th in a forest near the Arroyo Hondo river.
Eugenio's body was found showing signs of violence, beaten and with sticks buried in the abdomen. It was a brutal crime, he was stabbed at least four times, beaten with pipes, and finally his throat was cut.
The relatives have been demanding justice since then.
