A corpse in an advanced state of decomposition was found on Monday afternoon in an alley in the city of Santiago de Cuba, as reported on social media by journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada.

The discovery took place near the area known as the "red tanks," between the neighborhoods of Versalles and Altamira, the communicator pointed out.

Mayeta Labrada indicated -quoting the testimony of residents in the area- that the body was found partially buried, probably because animals unearthed it attracted by the foul smell. The area was cordoned off by the police for many hours.

In a later post, Mayeta Labrada urged the authorities of Santiago de Cuba and the Criminalistics department to publicly disclose the identity of the deceased person and provide details about the circumstances of their death.

"It seems that, based on the area where it was found, it could be a murder," he anticipated.

In the last few hours, the aforementioned source specified - based on the testimony of local sources - that the body has allegedly been identified as that of Heriberto Sánchez Reyes, 54 years old, who was a resident of Trinidad #1 street, between Peralejo and Jesús Menéndez Avenue.

The source explained that last Saturday at seven in the morning, Heriberto Sánchez went to pick up a scooter that had been purchased the day before by Doctor Yasmani Bueno Rodríguez from a colleague at the Frank País García Polyclinic in the town of Agüero.

They say that after being picked up, 'the motor' had a flat tire and Herilberto took it to the tire repair shop on Rastro Street, between Martí and Yarayó. After one in the afternoon on Saturday, he went out for a ride and his trail was lost until yesterday, when this corpse was found very far from his residence," the source stated.

Yosmany Mayeta indicated that they have confirmed that the body found would be that of the man who had been reported missing, but there is no trace of the motorbike.

“Presumably, Mr. Heriberto was murdered to steal his motorcycle, which its true owner could not enjoy,” concluded Mayeta Labrada, who promised further details as she gains access to the information.

As of the closing of this report, official press outlets have not commented on the discovery of the body.
