The Cuban actress Corina Mestre, a staunch defender of the Castro regime, passed away this Saturday from causes that have not been disclosed.
Mestre, 69 years old, passed away in Havana, as announced on his Twitter account by the Minister of Culture, Alpidio Alonso Grau.
"What devastating news! The great actress and educator Corina Mestre has passed away today in Havana. All of Cuba will mourn her. Cuban culture loses one of its most prominent figures, and the Revolution loses a steadfast activist. Our everlasting gratitude for your work and your example, dear sister!" he wrote.
Known for her extensive career in theater, radio, film, and television, she also served as a teacher at the National School of Art (ENA).
She began working in 1981 at the Grupo Teatro Estudio, directed by Raquel Revuelta, with which she produced over 70 stage performances.
The television audience remembers her for her remarkable performances in telenovelas such as Pasión y prejuicio and El eco de las piedras, the series Doble juego, and her leading role in the adaptation of Federico García Lorca's play La casa de Bernarda Alba.
For her professional merits, she was awarded the National Theater Prize 2022, the National Artistic Teaching Award, and the Alejo Carpentier Medal.
Alongside her distinguished acting career, she was a staunch supporter of the regime and actively participated in political events organized by the Party and the Government.
In May of last year, he referred to the Cuban activists and opponents who confronted the official duo Buena Fe during their tour in Spain as "barbarians."
"Cuban artists and intellectuals are constantly assaulted by the enemies, no, by the barbarians. Because this is a battle of good against evil," he stated in an interview with television.
In 2022, he signed the letter from the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) that denied the repression unleashed by the regime following the massive protests in Havana and other provinces against the blackouts.
A year earlier, in relation to the march on November 15, he stated that "socialism in Cuba is irreversible" and that such demonstrations could not be tolerated.
Mestre came to the defense of Castroism in a video in which he stated that the Cuban Constitution establishes the irreversible nature of socialism in the country, and that the entire population supports this political choice.
The actress was born in Havana and trained in Performing Arts at the Higher Institute of Art. In theater, she participated in plays such as Macbeth, Blood Weddings, The Festival of the Dove, and Public Opinion, among many others.
Her career in theater also encompassed working with children in various adaptations of classics such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Momo.
The Ministry of Culture dedicated a tribute on its Facebook wall this Saturday and expressed its condolences to family and friends.
The National Council of Performing Arts of Cuba also expressed its sorrow over his passing.
