The Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Wang Yi, held a meeting in Beijing with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, in which he reaffirmed "firm support" for the regime and expressed interest in expanding areas of cooperation and intensifying multilateral collaboration amid the economic crisis facing the island.
During the high-level meeting, Yi praised Cuba for its defense "of China's just positions in international forums" and reaffirmed the commitment to support its ally "in defending its sovereignty and in the fight against foreign intervention," according to the EFE news agency.
In this sense, the member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China denounced the "irrational American embargo" and "inclusion on the list of state sponsors of terrorism."
"Both states are good friends, who trust each other, good comrades who share the same objectives, and good brothers who share the blessings and misfortunes," highlights the note published on the Chinese foreign ministry's website.
Among many other compliments, Yi praised Cuba for sticking to the truth, challenging power, and setting a personal improvement benchmark for the cause of global progress. Additionally, he expressed the willingness to transform mutual political trust into more pragmatic cooperation measures in all areas.
Rodríguez, for his part, pointed out that the relationship has a deep foundation in public opinion and is a valuable asset worth pursuing and inheriting.
Cuba admires the globally recognized achievements in building socialism with Chinese characteristics under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, and sincerely appreciates his strong support in resisting the unreasonable blockade and interference from the United States, as well as overcoming temporary difficulties in Cuba's economic operation," said the island's chancellor.
The diplomat added that his government "will strengthen strategic coordination with China, jointly promote the agenda of the Global South, and safeguard sovereignty and independence in order to defend the cause of socialism."
The visit of the chancellor occurs after those made by Prime Minister Manuel Marrero in November of last year, and President Miguel Díaz-Canel in 2022.
A few days ago, a donation from China, consisting of 66 containers with over 1,580 tons of rice, arrived at the port of Mariel, in the western province of Artemisa.
The shipment was the first of a total of seven deliveries that will complete 20,000 tons of the important cereal between the months of June and August.
Likewise, the Cuban government is engaged in a campaign to increase tourism from China. In fact, in May, an Air China Boeing 787-9 plane arrived in Havana with 116 passengers, thus resuming the connection between the capitals of both territories.
Cuba and China, with diplomatic ties since 1960, maintain close political, economic, and commercial relations, in which the Asian country stands out as one of the main allies of the communist island.
In 2023, Rodríguez himself responded to various news reports that pointed out the existence of a Chinese espionage base in Cuba and described as "falsehood" the statements made by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The statements made by the US Secretary of State regarding the presence of a Chinese spy base in Cuba are false, completely false. Cuba's position on this issue is clear and unequivocal,” said Rodríguez.
As part of his international tour, the Cuban chancellor will visit Russia next week to attend a ministerial meeting of the BRICS group in the city of Nizhny Novgorod and meet with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in Moscow, as reported by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The regime seeks the support of its main allies in an attempt to salvage a country submerged in one of its worst crises due, among other factors, to the inefficiency of its centralized economic system, resulting in shortages of fuel, food, medicine, and other essential products for its inhabitants.
