Residents in South Florida have been warned that more heavy rains are expected in the coming days due to a tropical disturbance that has caused significant flash floods.
Fortunately, the disturbance has not reached cyclone status and only has a slight chance of developing into a tropical system as it moves into the Atlantic Ocean after crossing Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center.
However, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Miami warned on its Twitter account that a band of heavy rain is expected to fall over the region this Thursday.
A large convective band of showers and thunderstorms is developing, moving south for the third consecutive day. "Even a brief period of heavy rain could trigger more flash floods!" he pointed out.
The agency emphasized that significant flooding continues in several neighborhoods in southern Florida, particularly in parts of Collier, Miami-Dade, and Broward counties.
"With the streets flooded, any additional heavy rain today will cause additional flash floods," warned.
The information adds that conditions could deteriorate very quickly and suggested that the population stay off the roads and seek higher ground if heavy rain begins.
There is also a limited threat of a tornado or funnel cloud that could materialize in the southern part of the area during late morning to early afternoon.
The Wednesday rains caused floods that blocked streets and roads, where numerous vehicles were left floating adrift.
According to Local 10, on the main artery Interstate 95 in Broward County, southbound traffic was being diverted around a flooded section, and contractors had to come in to pump the drainage system. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that it would not reopen until the water was drained.
The mayors of Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood declared a state of emergency on Wednesday afternoon. Governor Ron DeSantis also did the same in five counties: Miami-Dade and Broward on the Atlantic coast, and Collier, Lee, and Sarasota in the west.
