A humble Cuban grandmother was caught looking for food in the trash containers in Havana.
The woman was filmed by the opposition member and former political prisoner Silverio Portal, who wanted to document it "so that the whole world would be aware of the critical situation that the system is causing," he said.
Although Silverio did not speak with the grandmother, he did spend a good while filming the lady in her search.
In the midst of the crisis shaking the country, more and more elderly people and other vulnerable individuals are surviving by scavenging through garbage. Faced with the difficult situation in which the regime has plunged the country, the elderly are one of the population groups most affected by the crisis. It is increasingly common to find older people in Cuba surviving by begging for alms, searching for food scraps in garbage, and even sleeping on the street.
One of them is Cuban Guillermo Durán, who survives by collecting scraps of food he finds in the dumpsters of Old Havana, Central Havana, and Plaza, in the country's capital, and then sells the stew for 500 pesos per tank, as reported by ADN Cuba.
This 57-year-old man reported that he collects two pots of sancocho daily, which he later sells for 500 pesos each, enabling him to earn 1,000 pesos each day, as reported by the news portal in a video published on Facebook.
On the other hand, a mother and her daughter were helped by several Cubans who were moved to see them picking up garbage in a landfill in the capital.
Another Cuban elderly woman, named Celeste, complained that "there is no food, I am just skin and bones," in the midst of a situation where she also cannot find medication for her anemia.
