Three members of a Cuban family residing in Florida died in a traffic accident that occurred last Wednesday in Boynton Beach; only the youngest child survived.
The deceased are Alex Cordoves, 46 years old; his wife Grechy Yanela Almaguer Pérez, 43 years old, from Holguín; and their son Diego, 10 years old.
The only one who survived is Fabio, who is two years old.
The four of them were in a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta when they were hit by a 2020 Lexus RX350 that was speeding, driven by a 54-year-old woman named Dawn Howard.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO), county firefighters declared Grechy Yanela dead at the scene. The older child was transported to Delray Medical Center where their death was certified. Alex, who was driving the car, suffered an internal decapitation, where the neck separates from the spinal cord, and is not expected to survive.
The youngest child suffered a fracture in his right tibia and is hospitalized at Delray Beach Medical Center.
On the other hand, the person responsible for the accident suffered minor injuries and was admitted to the same hospital under police surveillance.
According to the PBSO report, consulted by CBS12, the woman refused to go to the bathroom in the room accompanied by an officer, tried to avoid her, and even hit her on the wrist. Therefore, she was restrained, handcuffed to the bed, and has been charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer.
Relatives of the deceased opened an account on the digital platform GoFundMe to raise money for the funerals.
Arsenio Almaguer, brother of Grechy Yanela, revealed that the person responsible for the car accident was drunk and rear-ended their family's car.
"It caused the immediate death of my sister and my nephew. My brother-in-law is in a state of brain death, only breathing with the help of a machine. This left behind our little Fabio, my two-year-old nephew who survived and is fighting for his life, which will never be the same without his parents," he stated.
"This unfortunate car accident destroyed this family instantly, and I would like to bid them a honorable farewell. My sister was a loving and dedicated mother who lived for her family, which is my family even now that they are no longer here," he added.
The campaign aims to raise $15,000. At the time of writing this note, $9,410 has been donated.
