Yucimí Duarte, an animal protector in Havana, sought help last Thursday on social media to feed the 45 animals in her care in the municipality of Regla.

"I reach out to you for help with my animals—14 dogs, 8 cats, and 23 more cats from the colony I care for—as I no longer have the resources this month to buy them food," the activist pointed out on Facebook, mentioning that she oversees a small shelter in Regla.

"I rarely ask for help, but this time I feel compelled to do so, as I was out of work for a month due to dengue and my finances are in crisis," explained the caretaker, who urgently requested assistance, as she was almost out of food for the animals. "I only have food for today, and I don’t know what else I am going to do."

The economic crisis in Cuba, which hampers the feeding of animals under the protection of activists, often compromises the care of dogs and cats.

Recently, in the province of Sancti Spíritus, assistance was requested for a shelter managed by two elderly individuals that was facing a shortage of food.

The ARCA Sancti Spíritus Foundation published a message on Facebook informing that Esperanza and Guillén, in charge of the shelter, had gone 15 days without receiving the allocated food supplies, which prompted their request for assistance.

In 2023, two elderly individuals faced a similar situation in Havana, where they provided shelter in their home and cared for a hundred dogs and cats without the necessary resources to feed them.

A post in the Facebook group "Super Mamis en La Habana" alerted about the situation and urged those who can to contribute to the administrators of the shelter located in the municipality of San Miguel del Padrón.
