Two individuals of Cuban nationality were arrested in Maldonado, Uruguay, following a police control operation.

The men, identified by their initials as D.M.R., 49 years old, and R.D.M.P., 25 years old, were taken to a police station, according to the Uruguayan media outlet Gente Online.

During the inspection, the Cubans had two vehicles seized, in which they were transporting goods, including alcoholic beverages and Brazilian-origin cigarettes.

The sentences issued by a Uruguayan court established 3 months of probation for D.M.R., who was convicted of smuggling.

Meanwhile, R.D.M.P. will have to serve 5 months under probation for two counts of smuggling in a repeated manner, the mentioned outlet indicated.

Last July, two young Cubans, a 23-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, were arrested in the Canelones department for stealing cartons of eggs from the poultry farm where they worked.

The arrested individuals - whose identities have not been disclosed - committed the robbery on a farm located in the jurisdiction of the 12th Section of San Bautista, in the town of San Antonio.

A little over a year ago, in the city of Maldonado itself, four Cubans who were part of a criminal gang were accused of smuggling goods and dealing in stolen property.

The Cubans were arrested after a tip following the detention of some Uruguayan drivers in two trucks, in which a large amount of cash was found, led to nearby homes from where the vehicles had departed.

Uruguay is one of the common destinations for Cubans emigrating from the island due to the economic crisis, and they leave in search of better living conditions. Thousands of families have settled in that South American nation in recent years.
