A sewage leak that had been contaminating and causing problems in Santiago de Cuba for over a week, where children played, was finally repaired on Tuesday by the local government following a complaint shared on social media.
Journalist Yosmany Mayeta noted on Facebook that "bringing the truth to light in a timely manner prevents a problem from escalating," highlighting the importance of denouncing the regime's inaction through social media.
"Yesterday it was reported, and today they are already addressing an issue that has been reported for over a week," he noted, pointing out that the leak was located on Independencia Street, between 4th and 5th, in the Sueño neighborhood.
This Monday, the journalist reported on social media that some children were playing near a sewage outlet. Despite being located just a few meters away from the Saturnino Lora Provincial Hospital, the regime had not taken prompt measures to address the issue.
According to Mayeta, the whistleblower stated that the breakage had been reported several days earlier, but the regime showed no interest, ignoring the fact that children were playing in a street flooded with sewage water.
Additionally, residents reported that the executives of the "Aguas Santiago" Water and Sewer Company seemed to be ignoring the seriousness of the situation, without taking into account that both the Provincial Hospital and the Provincial Cardiocenter are nearby, facilities that should be safeguarded against this type of contamination.
Reports of neglected blockages by the government of Santiago de Cuba are becoming increasingly frequent, leading to sewage waters continuing to pose a constant health risk to the population.
In June, some residents of Santiago de Cuba reported that they had been living with a blockage in the building's sewage system for over a month.
According to independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada's post on Facebook, the shocking situation is taking place in Building 2 on Punta Gorda Road, in the Nuevo Van Van neighborhood, within the Altamira popular council.
The same situation was reported in May when the portal Diario de Cuba published a video on Facebook showing a massive open trench in the middle of the street, several dozen meters long, from which black water was emerging.
