Cuban authorities detained a man identified as Yunierkys Betancourt Puentes this Saturday for allegedly harassing a 12-year-old girl in Sagua la Grande, Villa Clara.

According to gathered testimonies, the man verbally harassed the minor, telling her "inappropriate things" that no adult should address to a girl. Although the harassment did not escalate to physical levels, the seriousness of the events was enough for the minor's relatives to file a complaint with the local police.

In response to the accusations, the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) of Sagua la Grande arrested the individual and filed a formal complaint, according to the official profile Tocororo Cubano on Facebook.

The publication states that the accused was fined, but since he was unable or unwilling to pay the fine, it was decided to send him to prison, where he remains awaiting trial. Additionally, he was prohibited from approaching the girl.

Social media has seen allegations circulating that accuse the authorities of not acting with the necessary seriousness and of releasing the accused, something that the regime's profile attempted to deny.

Cuba is experiencing a growing incidence of gender violence, and reports of child abuse have been made on several occasions. This week, the Provincial Court of Sancti Spíritus sentenced a man with HIV to 18 years in prison for sexually abusing a minor with a mental disability.

The 55-year-old aggressor did not care about being a carrier of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and engaged in sexual acts with the child several times without ever using protection.

Local press emphasized that this is not the only case of this nature being tried in the Sancti Spíritus court so far this year.
