The Cuban ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel warned through social media about the proximity and possible consequences of the dangerous tropical storm Helene.
"We alert our people about the forecast of intense rains in the west and center of the country. We have instructed all authorities to take the necessary measures to protect lives and material resources. We are constantly monitoring the situation. Exercise great caution during these hours," wrote the president on the social network X.
Helene, the ninth tropical cyclone in the current hurricane season in the Atlantic and the eighth named storm, has recently been moving over the western Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Quintana Roo, and with a probable trajectory toward the Yucatán Channel in Mexico, could soon become a hurricane.
The main danger for Cuba lies in the western part of the island. The island's deteriorating economy could be further affected by the damages that the intense rains from Helene cause in the country.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has warned about the possibility of severe weather conditions, even though the greatest impact is expected in the United States.
Over the southeastern United States, Helene is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 4 to 8 inches, with isolated totals around 12 inches. This rain will likely result in areas of considerable flash flooding and urban flooding, with chances of minor to moderate flooding on rivers and possible isolated flooding of major rivers, a report from wapatv reflected.
Lisa Bucci, a hurricane specialist, made a call asking people not to be deceived by the current size of the cyclonic system. "We expect it to rapidly intensify," she declared to the Telemundo network.
He also added that people in the regions under watch and warning should be prepared to be without power and have enough food and water for at least three days.
