The 2024 Hurricane Season has been one of the most active in recent years, significantly affecting the Caribbean region and the coast of Florida. Hurricane Helene stood out as one of the most destructive cyclones, causing heavy rains, flooding, and damage in Cuba, especially in the western provinces.
Hurricane Helene formed in the northwest Caribbean Sea, rapidly intensifying and reaching category 1 before making landfall in Pinar del Río. The storm surges and torrential rains caused significant flooding and overflow of rivers and reservoirs, impacting infrastructure and leaving thousands of people without electricity.
As Helene progressed towards the Gulf of Mexico, its impact extended to Florida, where authorities issued hurricane warnings and ordered evacuations in several coastal areas. Sustained winds reached speeds of up to 130 km/h, and the accumulated rainfall caused urban flooding and landslides.
In addition to Helene, other cyclones such as tropical storm Gordon and hurricane Francine also contributed to the severity of the season, which is forecasted to remain active until the end of November. Local and national authorities have urged the population to stay alert and follow civil protection recommendations against possible future weather events.
