Hurricane Helene has already caused the first floods in Pinar del Río, where reports indicate sea penetrations, overflowing rivers, and overflowing reservoirs.
According to the radio station Radio Guamá, as of Tuesday afternoon, out of the 24 reservoirs in the province, 17 were already overflowing, and generally, they are at 93% of their filling capacity.
The dams in the territory can hold more than 95 million cubic meters of water.
In the last 20 hours, the network of rain gauges from Recursos Hidráulicos recorded significant rainfall accumulations in the following reservoirs: Herradura Dam (218.4 mm), Los Palacios (186.8 mm), La Juventud (167 mm), and Sitio Peña (151.3 mm).
Radio Guamá shared images taken in Cortés and Ciudad Sandino on its Facebook wall, in the municipality of Sandino.
In the municipality of Los Palacios, the main authorities and specialists are monitoring the rise of the reservoirs and rivers following the heavy rainfall recorded.
The water from the "La Juventud" Dam has already covered the section of the road leading to San Diego de los Baños, in the Villa Amistad area.
"In a few hours, vehicle traffic in the area will be closed due to the constant and intense rains," said journalist Ricardo Rodríguez González on his Facebook profile.
In Puerta de Golpe, a popular council in the municipality of Consolación del Sur, 100 mm of rain have been reported so far, with no significant damage.
"At this moment, El Palenque is cut off by road. In the area, conditions have been created for passage, in case of need, through the flooded road," said journalist Pedro Lázaro Rodríguez Gil on Facebook.
Tropical storm Helene became a category 1 hurricane on Wednesday and continues to gain strength rapidly in the Caribbean Sea as it moves toward the northwest coast of Florida.
Helene now has maximum sustained winds of 130 km/h and is moving north-northwest at 17 km/h, indicating that it has slightly increased its translational speed.
