The derailing of a passenger train on Friday afternoon in Matanzas has prevented the transfer of other travelers as the circulation on the Central Line has been interrupted.
The incident occurred at kilometer 149.2, between the Jovellanos and Quintana stations.
According to the Minister of Transportation, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, as a result of the accident, the train coming from Guantánamo has not been able to travel to Havana and remains in Ciego de Ávila, and neither the train from Sancti Spíritus nor the one from Holguín has been able to leave Havana.
"Many people remain at the La Coubre station for an extended period," he said on his Facebook.
The leader shared photos of the repair work on the Central Line during the night of Friday and the early morning of Saturday.
The incident occurred at 5:15 pm when Extra Train 107, locomotive 38209 with three cars heading towards the municipality of Los Arabos, derailed while traveling along km 149.2 of the Central Line.
The incident did not result in any injuries, all passengers were evacuated from the site.
According to the initial report, upon learning of the incident, the main executives of the railways in the territory and of the Unión de Ferrocarriles de Cuba (UFC), the Railway Transport Administration (ATF), authorities from the Party and the Government, and members of the Police and other bodies of the Ministry of the Interior arrived at the scene.
"The work is being done to resolve the issue in order to restore train traffic as quickly as possible," the report specified.
The causes of the incident have not yet been revealed.
