Train circulation restored on the central line after derailment in Matanzas

According to the minister, efforts were made to restore the line while trying not to cause further damage to the locomotive and the three affected cars.

Cuban authorities restored train service on the Central Line at 12:55 this morning, after the interruption caused by a train derailment in Matanzas on Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred at 5:15 pm when Extra Train 107, locomotive 38209 with three cars heading towards the municipality of Los Arabos, derailed at km 149.2 of the Central Line, between the stations of Jovellanos and Quintana.

The Minister of Transport, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, recalled that the accident caused several trains in circulation to be halted for long periods at different points in the country.

According to what was said, while work was being carried out to restore the line, trying not to inflict new damage to the locomotive and the three affected cars, measures were taken to assist the passengers of the different trains.

"On a national train, approximately 1,000 people are transported, and in circumstances like this, it is a challenge to be able to attend to them and avoid harming their health," he noted.

Rodríguez Dávila announced an analysis of the causes of the accident and emphasized that the railway infrastructure has been suffering from the impacts of lacking resources for its maintenance for years.

The derailment of the local train in Matanzas resulted in the train from Guantánamo being unable to reach Havana, as it was stranded in Ciego de Ávila.

Neither the train from Sancti Spíritus nor the one from Holguín could leave Havana, which is why many people had to stay for a long time waiting at the La Coubre station.

The incident did not cause any injuries; all passengers were evacuated from the location.
