The Cuban slugger José Dariel "Pito" Abreu, a key figure in a distinguished career in Major League Baseball (MLB), will join the San Juan Senators for the upcoming winter baseball season in Puerto Rico.
According to specialized journalist Francis Romero on Facebook, Abreu, 37, said "yes, I accept" to the Puerto Rican team and will report in November, with the goal of preparing for a possible return to the MLB in 2025, after being left out of the Houston Astros.
The veteran player, known for his power and consistency at the plate, will take advantage of the winter league to regain competitive rhythm after a season affected by injuries and performance issues.
The decision to join the Senators marks an important step in his career as he seeks to stay in shape and prove that he can still be a key player in the Majors.
Abreu, a true reference of Cuban baseball in the MLB, was namedMost Valuable Player of the American League in 2020and has maintained a remarkable career with three appearances in the All-Star Game.
Her participation in Puerto Rico will attract the attention of fans both on the island and internationally, generating expectations about her future in professional baseball.
That winter campaign will begin at the beginning of November, where Abreu will seek to make an impact and, hopefully, pave the way for a successful return to the "Big Top."
