The initial effects of Hurricane Oscar are already being felt in the city of Baracoa, Guantánamo, with the sea encroaching and flooding occurring along the seawall.
The internet user Zé Niel shared a video on Facebook that captures the fury of the raging sea, with waves already crashing against the seawall and causing the first breaches and flooding along the coastline of the city of Baracoa, Guantánamo.
"Look what's coming!" is heard from the person recording the video, as they showed how the sea was already reaching the houses closest to the seawall.
Since Saturday evening and into the early hours of Sunday, vulnerable communities were urged to take precautions and evacuate due to the risk of coastal flooding and inundations caused by heavy rainfall.
The internet user Zé Niel shared a video on Facebook showing a car with a loudspeaker announcing the evacuation of a community in Baracoa due to the imminent arrival of Hurricane Oscar.
"Attention, attention! A hurricane is approaching. This community will be evacuated, everyone must cooperate," is the message broadcasted by the jeep with a loudspeaker.
Similarly, Chely Tamayo shared some images on Facebook showing the intense rains that were already affecting the municipality of Maisí in Guantanamo.
"The weather is deteriorating in Maisí. Hurricane Óscar is bringing heavy rains," he noted.
Hurricane Oscar is approaching eastern Cuba with tropical storm winds that could reach between 101 and 119 km/h, according to the latest report from the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
It is expected that these winds will begin to affect the region this Sunday afternoon, around 2:00 PM, intensifying through the night and into the early hours of Monday.
The provinces of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, and the eastern parts of Holguín are the most vulnerable areas to this meteorological event. It is expected that municipalities such as San Antonio del Sur, Caimanera, Contramaestre, Palma Soriano, Mayarí, Antilla, and the coastal areas around Guardalavaca will experience the most intense conditions.
In light of the approach of Hurricane Oscar and its imminent impact on the eastern region of Cuba, the country's authorities have declared an alert phase for the province of Camagüey and an informative phase for Ciego de Ávila.
"An Alert Phase has been established for the province of Camagüey and an informative phase for Ciego de Ávila," reported the official journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso on his social media.
Previously, the Cyclonic Alert Phase had been declared for the provinces from Las Tunas to Guantánamo.
