Yodelvis Furones, a six-year-old boy who was rescued in Baracoa during Hurricane Oscar with a skull fracture, is in serious condition after being operated on in Santiago de Cuba.
The small child -rescued in serious condition with life-threatening risks after the collapse of his house- was transferred from Baracoa to the Antonio María Béguez Children's Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, where he underwent emergency surgery on Tuesday, and this Thursday he was reported to be in critical but stable condition.
In statements to the Cuban News Agency, Jesús Cabrera, the hospital director, indicated that Yodelvis has been on mechanical ventilation since the surgical intervention performed on October 22.
He added that the doctors plan to start enteral feeding through a nasogastric tube, depending on her progress.
Cabrera also highlighted the constant monitoring of the wound and the reinforcement of the suture to prevent complications. Yodelvis's parents were evacuated with him and are being evaluated by medical staff for potential injuries.
According to the doctor, the Intensive Care Unit has the necessary medications to ensure the child's care, who was injured when a tree fell on his house during the devastating passage of Tropical Storm Oscar in Guantánamo on October 20.
The ruling Miguel Díaz-Canel, who received strong criticism from the people of Guantánamo during a visit on Wednesday to the affected area, said on his X page that the minor had been "successfully operated on in Santiago de Cuba."
Practically cut off from land communication, with the La Farola viaduct connecting it to Guantánamo closed, Baracoa is still experiencing an emergency situation after the passage of Hurricane Oscar, which caused destruction in the area amid the critical scenario caused by the total collapse of the national electric power system that occurred last Friday.
Other nearby territories such as Imías and San Antonio del Sur, where seven deaths have been reported due to the floods, remain isolated.
